IELTS One Skill Retake: Rules, Cost and Who Accepts It

IELTS One Skill Retake lets you retake just one section, Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking, instead of the whole test. You must book and sit it within 60 days of your original computer-delivered test, and it costs less than a full test. But not every university or visa body accepts it, so check before you pay.
Quick answer: IELTS One Skill Retake is for computer-delivered Academic, General Training and UKVI tests. You retake one skill within 60 days of your original test, and results come in 3–5 days. It costs less than a full test (for example, INR 12,650 vs INR 19,000 in India), but not all organisations accept it.
What is IELTS One Skill Retake?
If you miss your target score in one section, you don't always need to sit all four parts again. One Skill Retake lets you redo just that section.
It's offered by both the British Council and IDP at participating test centres. All the rules below come from the British Council One Skill Retake FAQs.
IELTS One Skill Retake rules
The 60-day rule
You must book and sit your retake within 60 days of your original test date. That means the retake itself must happen inside the window, not just the booking. If you wait to "think about it," you may run out of time.
Who is eligible
You took computer-delivered IELTS Academic, General Training or IELTS for UKVI.
Your centre offers One Skill Retake (not all do).
If you took Writing on Paper, you can still retake, but in the same delivery mode.
Other rules to know
You can retake one skill per retake.
Results come in 3–5 days.
You can use either your new or your original Test Report Form (TRF).
Both TRFs are valid for 2 years from your original test date.
That last point matters. A retake does not reset the 2-year clock. If your deadline is far away, factor that in.
IELTS One Skill Retake cost in 2026
Here are the costs where official figures are available, next to the full computer-delivered test fee for comparison.
Country | One Skill Retake | Full test (Academic/GT) |
|---|---|---|
India | INR 12,650 | INR 19,000 |
Canada | About CAD 253 | CAD 335–361 + tax |

Pakistan (IDP) | PKR 48,050 | PKR 75,600–76,240 |
For other countries, check the price on the British Council booking site or the IDP test centre finder. Prices change, so always confirm before you pay.
In every country listed, a retake costs roughly 25–45% less than the full test. That's a real saving if it works for your situation.
Who accepts IELTS One Skill Retake?
This is the most important question, and only your receiving organisation can answer it. The official FAQs are clear: not all organisations accept One Skill Retake.
Before you book, do this:
Find the English requirements page of your university, employer or visa body.
Search the page for "One Skill Retake."
If it isn't mentioned, email the admissions or immigration contact and ask directly.
Save the reply in writing.
If they don't accept it, a retake won't help you, and you'll have spent money for nothing. Our score requirements guide can help you find the right page to check.
Should you retake one skill or the full test?
Use this simple guide.
Retake one skill if:
You missed your target in only one section.
Your other three scores meet or beat the requirement.
You're still inside the 60-day window.
Your organisation confirms it accepts One Skill Retake.
You know what went wrong, for example timing in Reading or a weak Task 2 in Writing.
Retake the full test if:
You missed your target in two or more sections.
Your overall band is short, and one section alone can't lift it.
Your organisation does not accept One Skill Retake.
You're past the 60-day window.
You took paper IELTS (only computer-delivered tests are eligible).
Check whether one skill can fix your overall band
Your overall band is the average of all four sections, rounded to the nearest half band. Scores ending in .25 round up to the next half band, and .75 rounds up to the next whole band. Source: IELTS scoring in detail.
So, if you need 6.5 overall and you scored 7.0, 7.0, 6.0 and 5.5, your average is 6.375, which rounds to 6.5. But if the Writing requirement is 6.0 and you got 5.5, you still need a retake for that skill.

How to prepare for a One Skill Retake
You have 60 days at most, and less once you allow time to book. Use it well:
Diagnose first. Look at your section score and think about where you lost points. Was it time, understanding, or the task itself?
Practice that skill only. Focus your study time on the one section you're retaking.
Test under real timing. Take a timed section in an IELTS practice test at least twice before your retake.
Measure the gap. Use our score gap tool to see how far you are from your target.
